Former Minister of the Interior of Uruguay, Nicolás Martinelli, invites you to attend Expo Seguridad in Mexico City from June 24 to 26. He will speak about Uruguay’s public safety advancements, highlighting how the country has embraced innovative technologies to combat crime, most notably, the gunshot detection system ShotSpotter, which he calls a “fundamental tool” in fighting gun violence.

Uruguay’s partnership with SoundThinking began in late 2023 when the Ministry of the Interior deployed ShotSpotter in two areas of Montevideo to help police respond more effectively to gunfire incidents. The results have been powerful. In 2024, ShotSpotter recorded 2,492 gunfire alerts, helping police transport 28 gunshot victims to hospitals and seize 27 firearms. Notably, only 28% of these alerts were called in to 9-1-1, demonstrating the technology’s ability to detect incidents that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.
The system has also strengthened evidence collection: police recovered 1,348 bullet casings, seized seven vehicles, and carried out three drug seizures—all contributing to improved community safety. As a result of these successes, Uruguay’s Ministry of the Interior signed a three-year contract in Q3 2024 to double ShotSpotter’s coverage area in Montevideo.
“We are pleased to extend our partnership with SoundThinking to further enhance public safety in Montevideo,” said Martinelli. “ShotSpotter has delivered positive results since its initial deployment, and we believe this expansion will strengthen our ability to protect our citizens in communities similarly affected by gun violence.”
