Highway Shootings are on the Rise and Difficult to Solve
500%+
increase in highway shootings in Illinois (2019-2021)
130%+

Highway shootings have surged dramatically over the past few years. To make matters worse, highway shooting cases, considered notoriously difficult to solve, typically have low clearance rates, empowering offenders to continue committing these crimes.
CURB HIGHWAY SHOOTINGS EFFICIENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY
ShotSpotter for Highways Enables Officers to Effectively Respond to and Solve Highway Shooting Cases
The lack of a precise incident location makes responding to and solving highway shootings incredibly difficult. ShotSpotter for Highways effectively overcomes that challenge. When a gunshot is fired on a stretch of highway in a ShotSpotter coverage area, the ShotSpotter system detects, locates, and immediately alerts police with a precise location of the gunfire event as well as the direction of the suspect vehicle in less than a minute. In addition, ShotSpotter can be integrated with other complementary technologies such as LPR and video systems to identify suspect vehicles. Those fast and precise alerts helps to save lives, improves clearance rates, reduces highway shutdown times, resulting in safer roads and communities.
THE FIGHT AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE
With ShotSpotter for Highways, Investigative Teams are Able to:
How ShotSpotter for Highways Works

1
Gun is fIred
When a gun is fired, the sound of a muzzle blast radiates outward, and the impulsive sound triggers acoustic sensors.
2
Detection and Location
ShotSpotter’s algorithm determines the location of the gunshot, as well as the speed and direction of the moving shooter.
3
Identify Vehicle & License Plate
The gunshot alert instantly triggers a multi-pronged technology response, directing PTZ cameras and capturing images from license plate readers to help identify the vehicle.
4
Analysts at the ShotSpotter Incident Review Center quickly audit the data and publish confirmed gunshots with speed and direction of the moving shooter to police.
5
Alerts are sent to dispatch centers, patrol officers’ smartphones and MDTs for immediate response. The entire process takes less than 60 seconds.
