The Southeast Missourian reported on a meeting of the Gun Violence Task Force in Cape Girardeau, MO. The session included a presentation from ST’s Sr. Director of Trauma Response and Community Engagement, Al Lewers. Explaining how ShotSpotter aids Cape Girardeau PD in responding to gunfire, Lewers highlighted that CGPD has recovered over 300 shell casings, explaining that tracking those shell casings to other crimes is a “key to success.” Considering the question of whether ShotSpotter was expensive, Lewers expressed just how costly homicides are. “A homicide costs society a minimum of about $827,000 to $1.5 million per homicide…” he said. “That’s taking into consideration the initial response of police, the investigation, police, EMS…the prosecution…[and more]. … So gun violence and homicides are very expensive.”
