New police stats give Chicago City Council ammo to support keeping ShotSpotter

May 1, 2024

The Chicago Sun-Times reported on new statistics from the Chicago Police Department that will surely provide ammunition for City Council members pushing to keep ShotSpotter technology despite Mayor Brandon Johnson’s plans to terminate the contract. The data shows over two minutes faster response times with ShotSpotter alerts compared to just-911 calls, while officers also received nearly three times more ShotSpotter-only alerts as combined 911 call/ShotSpotter alerts, especially in high-crime districts. With the mayor and council potentially headed for a legal battle akin to the 1980s “Council Wars” over ShotSpotter, proponents argue these latest numbers underscore the gunshot detection system’s proven value in rapidly responding to unreported gunfire incidents across Chicago.
