From the Parking Lot to the Front Door: What a Layered Security Approach Looks Like

A facility's security program is often viewed as starting at the front door. Yes, entrance security and appropriate weapons detection are paramount, but they are only one layer of the facility's physical security. A weapons detection system answers one question: does this specific person have a weapon on them as they enter the building? Security directors and facility administrators already understand this. The harder work is building the layers around that entrance, starting with an honest look at the risk.

A visitor walks up to the entrance without stopping to empty their pockets or step through a metal detector while a line forms behind them. They walk in, the same way they would into any building that wasn't screening for weapons. That frictionless entry matters for the visitor experience, but it is one control point in a much larger plan, and the scale of the problem that each security plan must solve is not shrinking.

Protecting Workplace Safety

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recorded 470 workplace homicides in 2024, up from 458 the year before. The FBI's 2024 active shooter report counted 24 designated incidents that year, down sharply from 48 in 2023, spread across open spaces, commercial locations, schools, government buildings, and a house of worship.

While no industry is immune to workplace violence, some sectors carry a higher risk. Healthcare workers, for example, face some of the highest documented violence rates of any industry tracked by BLS. Retail and hospitality face a related version of the problem, where high foot traffic and open access make screening harder to execute without disrupting the people the facility exists to serve. The common thread across every one of these environments is the same: open or semi-open access, and a population, whether patients, guests, employees, or customers, that cannot simply be turned away at the door.

California lawmakers have moved to make healthcare settings safer. AB 2975, signed in September 2024, requires Cal/OSHA to adopt standards by March 1, 2027, mandating automated weapons detection at a hospital's main public entrance, emergency department, and separate labor and delivery entrance. The law reflects a broader shift toward prioritizing weapons detection and layered security at healthcare facilities.

A single point of screening, no matter how good it is, is still a single point. Layered security combines people, processes, and technology into a single coordinated strategy rather than relying on a single checkpoint. That model typically includes discreet weapons detection at certain entrances and possibly metal detectors at high-risk entrances where the image of and need for higher security is important.

The layered security model also includes perimeter awareness technology, visitor management and access control, emergency communications, and staff trained in de-escalation and threat recognition. No single layer eliminates risk on its own. Together, they narrow the gap between a facility that only screens at the door and one that has visibility into who and what is approaching before anyone arrives.

Following a Layered Security Model

Walk through what a genuinely integrated approach could look like as an entrant approaches a facility, as a sequence of decision points a security director should be aware of:

What This Means For Security Planning

A few things worth carrying into budget conversations and vendor evaluations.

·         The data supports urgency: Workplace violence remains a persistent risk across sectors, and the industries carrying the highest documented exposure are also some of the most difficult to lock down without disrupting the people they exist to serve.

·         Layered doesn't have to mean complicated: The value of a platform where gunshot detection, ALPR, and weapons detection already share infrastructure is that a security director isn't stitching together three vendors and three consoles. Alerts, video, and vehicle data live in one place.

·         Visitor experience isn't in tension with security: The premise of passive, discreet screening is that a facility doesn't have to choose between a welcoming entrance and a secure one. Every facility is different and should decide on the level of security needed for each entrance.

·         Ask what happens after the alert. How you collect data and what you do with it, including the incident outcome, matters for future planning, such as budgeting and staffing.

The Bottom Line on Layered Security

Security teams have spent the last several years adapting to a threat environment that has changed faster than most facilities' infrastructure. That gap won't close by making the front door harder to walk through. The gap closes by treating the parking lot, the perimeter, and the entrance as parts of the same system.

The facilities that get this right aren't the ones with the most technology. They're the ones that took an honest look at where their risk areas are, then built layers that match them, entrance by entrance, without asking every visitor to prove they belong there before they're let in. That's the real difference between a security program built around a checkpoint and one built around a plan.
