CrimeTracer Turns a Four-Year-Old Expired Plate into the Break in a Critical Infrastructure Theft Ring

In February 2026, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was investigating a series of commercial burglaries targeting cell phone tower sites, specifically the batteries, throughout the county. Unknown suspects were breaking into secure telecommunications sites, making this more than a simple property crime. Removing the batteries disrupted cellular communications and raised concerns about critical infrastructure, public safety communications, and potential homeland security implications.

During the investigation, detectives developed a possible suspect vehicle and license plate, but the lead quickly went cold. The plate had been expired for more than four years, and extensive checks through traditional law enforcement databases — including inquiries with the Department of Motor Vehicles — failed to connect the vehicle to a current owner, address, or location.
