Situation

To help the police respond more effectively to gun violence, the Ministry of the Interior in Uruguay deployed ShotSpotter’s gunshot detection system in two areas of Montevideo in late 2023.

Results

Since the Ministry of the Interior deployed ShotSpotter, the gunshot detection technology has delivered tangible results.

Highlights from 2024 include:

2,492

gunfire alerts recorded

28

gunshot wound victims transported to hospital

27

firearms seized

109%

year-over-year increase in awareness of gunfire events

Of all the confirmed gunfire alerts, only 28% were called in to 9-1-1, highlighting ShotSpotter’s ability to detect incidents that would have otherwise been overlooked.

Additionally, ShotSpotter’s precise alerts have directly contributed to improved rates of evidence collection. In 2024, police seized 1,348 bullet casings and seven vehicles and conducted three drug seizure events, improving community safety.

In the third quarter of 2024, the Ministry of Interior for the Oriental Republic of Uruguay signed a three-year contract to extend ShotSpotter’s coverage by 12 square kilometers, doubling its current footprint in the capital city.

We are pleased to extend our partnership with SoundThinking to further enhance public safety in Montevideo. ShotSpotter has delivered positive results since its initial deployment, and we believe this expansion will strengthen our ability to protect our citizens in communities similarly affected by gun violence."
