Situation
The city of Perris has historically struggled with a high rate of unreported gunfire incidents, but in 2020, the situation grew more dire. A surge in unreported homicides that year ultimately led the police department to seek out SoundThinking’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system as an effective means of reporting on and responding to the increasingly prevalent threat of gunfire.
Results
Following the implementation of ShotSpotter, the Perris PD is now consistently dispatched to the precise location of gunfire incidents, enabling officers to collect more evidence, solve more cases, and reliably uphold community safety. One notable incident occurred on Christmas Eve 2022, when a call came in reporting a homicide in front of a house. By leveraging ShotSpotter, the Perris PD was able to identify other shootings that night in the vicinity that led up to the homicide, and through corroborating witness statements, was ultimately able to connect the perpetrators.
